I woke up so late that as soon as I did, I realized I was late for my meeting with Ila. I barely had time to eat anything before I was trotting up to get the bone, and running downhill to meet her along the road.
Running late for a meeting with Ila )

This book is great. Useful. Interesting. And… I’m rapidly beginning to suspect, won’t help me change at all. "Bodily functions" is a very literal thing. If I wanted to slow down my metabolism, or increase my fertility, there’s some interesting ideas here. I’m taxing my knowledge of medicine, from all that the kinfolk taught all those years back, with some of the things here - others seem more mystical in nature, and not really corresponding to any parts of living things that you can cut out. It talks about males and females, their parts, their differences, but so far, I see nothing that would help me with going from one to the other.

We talked for a bit more, but I wasn’t in the mood anymore. Instead, we pulled out some things to fish with, and kept fishing until it was time to check on Ila. That cheered me up some. Ila made it out, so I came back to the lake and resumed reading the book.

If I'm going to help Fells-the-Wyrm, I'm going to need help. Spirit help. Neryarta is, as always, going to be willing to bring succor (we'll see if he feels that way when he finds out she's part of the tribe that killed off the bear people), but I'll need mystical help. Time to go to the totem to start hunting down spirits that can help me understand the magic she's under.

This style of research is getting easier with time, I guess. I know where I can find books of a variety of stripes. Without something that’s come from a wolf person, or a mage, or a vampire, it’s a question of reading enough different tale spinners that the truth starts to emerge. It’s funny to think how close apes get to the truth at times - no one listens to them, though. Yesterday was going through a large portion of what I could find on seances in the library, and trying to ignore the garbage. I looked for whatever I could about mentions of ectoplasm. However, the library was mostly a waste of time - the bulk of what I read was about how the seances were fake, and the dead could not be contacted. That’s when I realized that is because the seances were popular one hundred years ago or more - not books that are likely to be in a library. I needed either older books, or reprints of old books. Time to go to the used book shops.

Light reading, and more experiments. Goodthing I couldn't go to the umbra tonight anyhow... )
Both books mention an older book titled ‘Dialogues with the Dead’ (as did a number of books in the library), from long ago. This appears to have started the whites speaking to the dead, until when some went through and began calling all of them frauds. This would be a nice book to have.

I just had a thought: I’ve started a collection, like I’m some sort of vampire or mage. A month ago, Tail-Eater lent me a book to keep me entertained while I guarded him. Now I have several of my own.

What a strange new direction my life has taken. My new hut will need a place to keep books, in addition to all the horned serpent artifacts I've collected over the years. What would my old packmates think?

I woke up bright and early, ate some fish, and went to see the fortune teller. I was pretty nervous, especially because I didn't know what I was supposed to do there, or how this goes. I also... suspected what I was going to find, and didn't actually want to be told it, I think. But I was I told myself it might be fake, and that convinced me to go inside. She definitely has a gift; it's like she's known me for years.

Instead of talking to my hand, she pulled out special cards. Here's what she found...

The Divination )

Some of it seemed to make sense at the time when she pulled out the cards, but some of it required her to explain some things, and ask questions. Some of the meanings are more straight forward than others.

It didn’t rain much overnight, and with the parka, I managed to stay warm enough. I would have slept well enough it wasn’t for the nightmares. I think I woke up once or twice. I feel stretched thin, like fat that’s spread across too much pilotbread. I spent the whole day trying to work up the drive to go tell Scar what I found. Or any philodox, at this point. But, it was… well, I guess I’m skipping ahead.

I started out by trying to find some food. Nothing. I’d do very poorly as a member of the Omega Tribe. I remembered what Rebecca (the cannibal) said about the woman in the van, and I decided to stop by there once I gave Yellow Horse his gift. Giving Quin his gift )

Running away from one Gnawer, and into two others )

It’s starting rain again. If this was in the wilds, I could make a shelter to deal with it. Or just take the wolf shape and go some place dry. I don’t like it here at all. I’ve piled enough cardboard to keep some of the rain off me, and I’m wearing my parka again. I did a little work on it first, though. Almost done, now. Gives me time to think - I’ve been making bad decisions ever since I came back. This thing about the cannibal, even if she is a good person in every other respect, is getting dumb.

And it’s not just making decisions: Being afraid of Earth-Whisperer mounting me, telling a Mage I just met to do things to my body, pissing myself in the tunnels, and these nightmares, just to name a few things. What the hell is going on with me? I’m supposed to be the wisest of the warriors, but I’m sure not acting like one.
