So many problems in the scab, so little time and interest.
Thursday, 13 February 2014 15:06We’re back to poor sleep.
Last night I distracted Neryarta for a while, playing and catching up with him for a few hours. He seems concerned about me, but salmon breath always was a bit of a worrier. It comes from his healing nature - when you’re a bear, all you smell is old wounds that need licked. It’s touching, even if it’s annoying when it’s aimed at me. He liked hearing about the battles, though. Brown Bears still have that touch of battle lust in them. I left out the worst details; he’d just start worrying me again.
I tried to sleep for a bit, but only got a little; I headed back to the tribal territory to study the rune-scape I drew for the mage. I think parts of it are starting to make sense… but there’s definitely a lot going on there. I need to stop being logical about it, and let my spirit drift a little as I go over it. Slug brought peyote. That might be a good use.
Eventually, I got a nap in, and then headed on down to the Farmhouse to be friendly towards the wyrmcomers. Fire-Dancer was there, and she sent a message for Memory to come. The two had plenty of talk about, but I don’t recognize most of it. Scab stuff that I can’t help with. But it did remind me of our cannibal problem. I could do something about that. I need to start rooting them out. We don’t need another Lightning-Branch around here.
Memory took off before I could ask her for my tail back, but Turtle came almost immediately after. Coincidence? He told me the mage was interested in helping the totem. I told him to say ‘no thanks.’ I barely trust most of the wolf people around here to do that. A mage in the caern, manipulating the totem? No. Turtle and Emma talked more about the scab problems, and I tried to help out where I could. Not much help, probably. I did think to ask a few questions about the cannibal, but I didn’t find out much.
By the end, it was clear I needed to head scab-wards to find out more. Turtle loaned me some money for bribes and food, and then asked me if I’d been told about the foxes near our tribe’s lands. It turns out he pupped out there, with my sister’s permission. He doesn’t want me to trap any foxes. And I just put out the snares, too! I understand why… eh. I don’t like this. Next I’ll meet a deer shape changer telling me not to hunt deer.
I went back to the lake, and pulled the worst of the snares, and found I already had an otter. Small one, girl, light brown. Won’t blend well with things, but still a good animal. I kept a few snares just for otter, and moved the rest for beaver. I guess beaver’s okay, too. Once I got back, I ran into my cousin. That seemed like as good of time as any to teach her our way of making prayer, for honouring the animals and the animal fathers. I took her out on a hunt, and after a while, we got a young boy elk that we ran to the ground. I walked her through the parts for the bladder festival; I think she didn’t pay much attention growing up! We went to the umbra and let the spirit go for rebirth, and she seemed very inspired by it. It’s always been special for me, but the first time I saw it? It was pure awe for her. That makes me feel warm inside. It was cold outside, though, and I haven’t finished making a new parka, so I left her to butcher and bring it back.
I headed for the scab, via the caern - and I ran into my first Bone Gnawer there. Slug. I tried to pretend like he had something on his face, that I’d get off. It wasn’t a good ruse. He knew something was up when I touched him, but not enough to resist me checking him. Slug is not the cannibal, that much I’m sure. I asked him about news in the scab, trying to keep it to things that might help me find the cannibal, but there wasn’t much details. He told me of Maddie, and another metis who arrived. Usually metis dark proclivities are related to sex, but maybe one branched into eating. I’ll meet with them. Aside from that, not much.
Slug didn’t know how long I was away, and asked me if wolf people turn into ghosts if they’re in the spirit lands that long. I made a bad joke about just growing breasts. He did not think that was a bad thing, and said he would change positions with me if he could. I don’t think he meant for my rank and station. Odd.
I decided I got a lot done, even though I didn’t go to the scab, and went back to my territory to study and sleep.
