Much ado about mages
Friday, 28 February 2014 23:00Slept on the bawn. Slept like crap. Going to sleep angry didn’t help. I was poking around for a bit, and heard Fire-Dancer getting pretty heated about things. I got concerned, and headed over to see what was going on. She and Memory were talking about something, and Fire-Dancer smelled just plain upset. She said she found my gift at the mage’s place, and apparently found out he was a worldwarper. The last piece came a moment later, when she said something that made me realize he was her boyfriend. She was upset we didn’t tell her, and he didn’t tell her. I told her that I didn’t know she was courting him.
She… she clearly cared for him, given how distraught she was. It made me feel pretty bad for her. I didn’t try to make her feel better (that’s a losing game), but I tried to make her feel… slightly less worse. I tried to encourage her to talk to him about how she feels, before the moon gets bigger again. Memory kept saying stupid things (though, what do I know? I can’t keep any girlfriends); I told her not to overthink things, and go with how she feels. At that point, I figured what she needed is me gone, so she could cool down, so I headed out. I like her, and I'm kind of angry that Nick made her so upset.
It started to get really hot. Really, really hot. I haven’t shed yet, and it got sweltering. Despite the risk of running into Unfinished Business, I headed back east to find some snow to cool down in. While I was eating some shrews, my cousin snuck up on me and jumped on me. I damn near killed her. I am too high strung right now, I swear. I asked her not to do that again, because I don’t want to kill her by mistake.
We talked about packing again. She’s committed to packing with me, which is great. I told her I had concerns about Unfinished Business, but she just offered to talk to her for me. Not quite what I was hoping for. Apparently they were going to pack at some point? And they didn’t, for whatever reason. I headed on back with her, but half way there, decided to head over and go study for a bit.
There’s been lots of talk of mages lately. It seems I can’t turn a rock without something that mages aren’t involved in, right now. And with Nicodemus trying to mate with Fire-Dancer, now? I’m not sure about him any more. Why is he mating with her? Why does he help? Why do any mages do anything? The mage mandala was a logical thing to study while thinking about these things. I’m close. I’ve got some of it, there’s just some things that seem to slip through my fingers when I try to think about them… there are connections that seem to be meaningless to me, but are of great importance to the outermost track. It’s not Null - I figured that out already. It’s around and beyond Null. What does that even mean? Further than far? I didn’t want to consult my source, but it was bugging me. I wondered if the other animal people had any interesting thoughts about this. I wanted to talk to Turtle anyhow, so I headed that way.
Turtle was at his boat.
Wait, Turtle lives on a boat? Like, say, a turtle? I didn’t even think about that. Too funny.
Anyhow, he was on his ship, and I stopped by. First thing first, I apologized for all the rage from the night before. I don’t want kin to feel unsafe up at the lake (even kin who happen to be foxes). He apologized again for picking at me, and seemed to mean it. We left it there, and talked about Nicodemus instead. Turtle trusts the mage very implicitly. Not a surprise - the mage saved his life. I more or less outlined my thoughts:
Mages have allegiances we don’t understand.
He’s an orphan, so he has even less understandable allegiances.
We don’t know why he helps, period.
He’s not like us, where we feel the pull of the grandmother directly. He has no inborn reason to serve her.
Even the animal people have traitors, despite having inborn reasons to do the right thing.
Not stated: He hurt Fire-Dancer, his girlfriend, being a mage first.
Not stated: The fact that he’s dating one of us at all is very odd.
Turtle pointed out that all evidence to this point suggested whatever reason he does things, he does good things. And we don’t have any reason to think he’ll stop doing good any time soon.
After a while, I asked him about what the foxes know about the farthest reaches. Apparently not much (I think this is also because he’s not a sorcerer fox). They’re too young. He thought I should talk to the dragon people, or coyote people. I don’t think I’ll be getting much help from either
Headed back to the Lake to give every thing a lot more thought. It just gave my thoughts a chance to get tangled up again, though. Started a small fire to use for dance of lights, to try and cut through some of this mess.
