One with the earth

How do you impress the Earth Elementals? I’ve previous worked with Earth and Air Elementals to learn one of my abilities, so they should have been the easiest to convince I’m worthy. Or so you’d think. The Earth Lords (and the god of stone) value strength and patience, which are hard to demonstrate on a time scale that I can do. Somewhere out there, there’s an Earth Lord about as old as these mountains themselves. To it, I could spend three lifetimes trying to show how patient I can be before it’d notice. That won’t do. It’s time for… other measures.

I hauled a boulder up to the top of one of the peaks, in the umbra, and nearly killed myself doing that. Even starting half-way up the mountain, it’s hard work dragging things up there. There’s still snow and ice up there, which was perfect. It took pounding, howling, and throwing the boulder into a snowbank to get things started (a good half hour of work), but when it did, the whole side of the mountain began to move. I hopped on the boulder, and went with it.

Down south, you know how they ride boards on the water? Like that, except far, far more exhilarating. I was one with the avalanche for what felt like forever, but was probably half a minute. The feeling of power, and mastery, and the thrill of the danger. It was so alive!

And then I faltered, and got sucked down into the moving mass. Shit.

I don’t know how long it was before I stopped moving, but I took war form to endure the most I could. When I was sure I wasn’t moving anymore, I took a smaller form, so I would have room to move, and a nice big air pocket. It took a good long few minutes before my bruises and broken bones finally mended. I then had to start digging. I dug and dug and dug some more, trying to go up to the surface. Really wish I had air elementals on my side, because my good lung burned so bad. It couldn’t have been that long, because otherwise I’d have died down there, but I finally broke into the moonlight and gasped for air (or else I couldn’t be writing this!). Even in the air, I was so dizzy I fell over and passed out. In the air-deprived haze, I saw glimpses of sacred signs I was seeking. Someone was impressed - or at least approved.

When I came to, Sapphire was there, wanting to know why I was laying on the snow. The avalanche carried me all the way down into the yellowcreek valley. On the realm side, there was no avalanche - but I wouldn’t be surprised if there is in a few days. Best to stay clear.
